The excellence of Oltrepò Pavese’s terroir

oltrepò pavese

Oltrepò Pavese, located to the south of Milan, is a place where winemaking tradition blends with a unique terroir. Its vineyards, scattered among picturesque hills and medieval villages, produce some of Italy’s most extraordinary wines.

The secret of this region lies in the enchanting variety of soils, ranging from clayey to limestone, ideal for grape varieties such as Pinot Noir, Moscato, and Barbera. This diverse terroir provides winemakers with the opportunity to experiment and create wines of great character and complexity.

Oltrepò Pavese wineries make the most of this natural heritage to produce high-quality wines, which are often unknown beyond Italy’s borders but are well worth discovering and tasting.

An intimate experience in Family Wineries

What makes Oltrepò Pavese wineries so special is the intimate and family atmosphere that welcomes visitors. Many of these wineries have been run by families for generations, with stories of passion and dedication passed down from father to son.

These families proudly open the doors of their wineries and are happy to share their knowledge, traditions, and, of course, their wines with visitors.

In addition to guided tastings, it is common to find authentic experiences such as lunches or dinners in the vineyards, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the unique atmosphere of this region. Each winery has its own story to tell and its wines to sample, creating an unforgettable experience for those who wish to explore Oltrepò Pavese through the glass of a good wine.

Lefiole Oltrepò Pavese

The first winery we are talking about is Lefiole, owned by Elisa and Silvia Piaggi.

The two sisters, affectionately called “Le fiole” in the Oltrepadana dialect, grew up in Montalto Pavese, and even though they now live elsewhere, it is in these hills that they feel at home. This connection has motivated them to do something for their region, for their traditions.

Elisa and Silvia have decided to offer the opportunity to visit their establishment and fully immerse in the Oltrepò Pavese territory.

You will taste their wines produced along with the gastronomic excellences of the region.

Tenuta Mazzolino

Tenuta Mazzolino

Tenuta Mazzolino is a story of passion, dedication, and love for the vine, with a deep respect for the surrounding nature.

It begins with Francesca’s grandfather, Enrico, who discovers his calling for Pinot Noir on the “Hill of Pinot Noir” and starts cultivating it with the help of experienced friends. Right from the start, they began importing vine cuttings and the finest wood for aging directly from Burgundy, while Sandra, Francesca’s mother, began managing the estate.

Francesca started studying law but, drawn by her grandfather Enrico, decided to fully commit in 2015, combining tradition and innovation with the help of a team of collaborators.

Today, the company is moving closer to organic farming, cultivating with respect for the environment and producing authentic and distinct wines.

Prime Alture

Prime Alture

In 2006, Roberto Lechiancole and his wife Anna founded the agricultural company Prime Alture, which arose on the site of the old Cascina Campone.

Located amidst the hills of Pavia, the company combines their passions for wine and hospitality, giving birth to the Prime Alture Wine Resort, a high-quality winery with full accommodation facilities, creating a countryside getaway.

Today, Prime Alture spans over ten hectares and produces around forty thousand bottles per year, including Pinot Noir and Merlot. This achievement is made possible through a modern cellar that preserves the unique qualities of Lombard grapes through careful processing, such as crate harvesting, timely pressing, and protection from oxygen at all stages of production.

Thanks to these processes, including special attention to bottling, Prime Alture wines maintain their native characteristics and are recognizable for their distinctive identity.
