With 107,000 hectares of vineyards, it is one of the four major wine-producing regions in Italy, alongside Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, and Puglia.

Major Production Areas in Sicily

The major production areas in Sicily can be divided into four main regions where the best Sicilian wineries are located:

  1. Central-Western Area: This area accounts for 85% of the production and includes the provinces of Trapani, Palermo, Agrigento, and partially Caltanissetta. It is known for its diverse terroirs and encompasses a wide range of grape varieties.
  2. South-Eastern Area: This region is characterized by Mediterranean red soils and white soils with a limestone matrix. It is known for producing wines with distinct characteristics influenced by the unique soil composition.
  3. North-Eastern Area: This area is characterized by the viticulture around Mount Etna, which can be considered an “island within an island” due to its unique features. The volcanic soils contribute to the wines’ particular mineral sensation, enhancing their longevity, especially in white wines.
  4. Islands Area: This area includes Pantelleria and the Aeolian Islands. Pantelleria, located at sea level, is known as the “homeland” of Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria). In the Aeolian Islands, vineyards are primarily found on the islands of Salina, Lipari, and Vulcano, with the most widespread grape variety being Malvasia di Lipari.
